A Stone’s Throw
A Family Getaway
Elijah James Stone, co-founder of Stone & Thomas Department Store in Wheeling, West Virginia was among the first to build cottages in Mountain Lake Park. Eventually occupying three properties on the corner of Oak and G Streets, the Stones created a summer enclave for the entire family.
Stone Cottage’s front porch became a common meeting place for the Mountain Lake Park Women’s Civic Club. Next door is Sumner Stone Cottage, Elijah’s brother’s residence, which was often referred to as the
“bachelors” cottage and a place where visiting guests could stay. Diagonally across the street sits “The Gables,” with its guest house called “The Haunt.” Between the multiple structures, there was plenty of room for family, extended family, and guests to enjoy the mountain climate and the Chautauqua community.
Since 1910, The Gables has remained in the Stone family and has been generationally cared for and updated to include modern living while retaining its original Victorian charm. Each of the three homes features unique architecture including Stone Cottage’s Colonial Revival, Sumner Stone’s Queen Ann, and The Gable’s Gothic style.
