Mountain Lake was fed by the Little Youghiogheny. A dam was constructed to contain the water and the shoreline was tidied up. It was not a deep lake but it provided a source of income through ice harvesting. Annual contracts with the B&O Railroad and hotels justified the investment. Residents also enjoyed ice home delivery using pre-paid coupon books.

When the town was founded, there was no Lake. The manmade body of water became a centerpiece of recreation and allure for travelers who partook in boating, fishing, and swimming.
