Dr. J.B. Young
Lauded Author On Gettysburg
As an accomplished writer, Dr. Jesse Bowman Young left nine volumes in his 45 years of writing. Most notable was “The Battle At Gettysburg,” his accounts while fighting for the Union which is still regarded as an illustrative classic.
Young was born in Berwick, Pennsylvania in 1844. In the autumn of 1866, Young entered Dickinson College. Two years later he graduated with the class of 1868 along with J.F. Goucher. Following his education, he entered the Methodist calling and ministered mostly in the Midwest.
Serving three years in the Civil War, Young rose to the ranks of Captain of the Eighty-fourth Pennsylvania Volunteers. Following the war, he pursued the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal Church, exercising his skills as an eloquent orator. He located to Jacksonville, FL in 1908 to be a pastor until 1913 when he retired to devote his full attention to literary work.
In 1882, Young lectured at the Mountain Lake Park Assembly about his travels which included “Lime-light Lantern Views” of the British Isles. He owned a “Park” cottage along Hazel Glade which burned to the ground in 1910. At the time of the fire, the family of Mr. Mann, of Cumberland had been occupying the residence. The property has changed hands since.
