Do you love history?

Mountains and Museums is Saturday, May 25, 2024. Garrett County museums, including the Ticket Office Museum in the Historic District of Mountain Lake Park, will be open from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Saturday. The Oakland Museums will also be open on Sunday from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM.

What's special about Mountain Lake Park? The town was founded in 1881 as Maryland's original Chautauqua resort community along the B&O Railroad. Visitors arrived in the thousands by rail to attend camp meetings, live performances, lectures, and schools of learning. Annual summer residents build charming cottages in Victorian rural resort motifs, many of which remain. Pick up a free walking/driving tour map to learn about the cottages' origins. Volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about this unique town’s past.

Make a day of museum crawling in the county to catch the highlights of Garrett County's rich history.
