The Bashford Amphitheater welcomed 5,000 spectators for several decades.
LIVING AMONG GIANTS
The Amphitheater’s exterior cut a stunning silhouette under a canopy of large oaks. The Ticket Office once served as the entryway to performances. A fence was eventually built around the grounds for crow control. Tent flaps would be raised or lowered to control the light and shelter from inclement weather.
The Mountain Chautauqua quickly outgrew the original Assembly Hall auditorium that sat 300 to 500 people. Discussion for a 5,000-seat amphitheater began in 1893. The “new” auditorium was under construction by 1899 and dedicated in 1900. A section of the boardwalk network is visible in the foreground and was a feature for visitors strolling around the Park.
The interior was equally impressive with wrap-around seating and a stage that could hold 400 performers. Many famous people graced The Mountain Chautauqua stage. The presidential candidate, Robert LaFollette visited during his campaign and President Taft addressed 10,000 people about World peace.
