The Mountain Lake Park Historic District earned its designation largely due to the diverse styles of neighborhood architecture. Cottage owners hailed from Wheeling, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Washington, D.C. and beyond, bringing with them their personal taste. Flights of fancy were common including sprawling porches, widow’s walks, sleeping porches, and Juliet balconies. The harsh winters reeked havoc on fragile designs not suitable for heavy snowfalls.
